Top 5 security mistakes most Mac users make

Here are the most dangerous things to click on on the internet. Many Mac users have fallen for these traps but you’re not one of them. See our chart of popular Mac security mistakes.

1. Click on fake Flash Player update

Some browser hijackers mask themselves as Flash Player updates. Typically they will install their launch agents on your Mac to show you advertising scripts. As of 2019, Flash Player technology is increasingly going extinct. But even if you decide to update anything, go directly to the Adobe’s site.

How to prevent it

CleanMyMac X is the latest malware remover tool by MacPaw. It locates hidden background apps on your Mac. Using this tool you can disableyour Launch Agents, those that disguise as fake flash players or updaters.

2. Unknowingly give access to your camera and mic

Mark Zuckerberg covers his MacBook camera and microphone with tape. Think of that. All those “cookies permissions” that we daily accept, have blunted our instincts. If some weird cooking app wants to access your camera this is suspicious. And yes, closely read what that dialogue box says.

How to neutralize it

You can disable unseen data-collecting apps using the spyware detector in CleanMyMac X. It has a list of apps that have been caught collecting users’ data. If it finds such app, it will block its access to your MacBook. It deletes:
• data-mining apps            • password miners            • backdoor programs

3. “Your Mac is infected” trap

Macs do get viruses but not because some fake Mac cleaner tells you so. Such pop-ups are a sign of adware, so leave that site immediately. Afterwards, make sure to clean your browser cache. Clicking on “Your Mac is infected” often results in hijacked browser settings.

Fake antiviruses vs real ones

CleanMyMac X by MacPaw is notarized by Apple. Notarization process assures that an app’s code is free from malicious elements. CleanMyMac X isn’t advertised as free but it does have a free demo. You can safely try all the tools before you decide to keep it on your Mac.

4. Opening a doc attached in email

According to Group-IB research company, 71% of mail viruses are distributed via email attachments. The most risky file extensions are .zip, .exe, and .pdf. Here is the basic rule to remember: if you didn’t expect this email, treat is as suspicious.

5. Downloading anything via a torrent client

Most programs on torrent sites have likely been tampered with. They may also be bundled with other apps. If you are serious about security of your Mac, discard your torrent client. What’s more, it noticeably slows down your Mac.
